My understanding is:
Rookie < 2 Years Novice > 2 Years < ??
Amatuer == XBall
So what "was" Amateur last year is back to being Novice as it was before (Equiv to Nov B(?) from TOC). You can expect most of the better Amateur players from last year sucked up by the 4 XBall Teams.

but if you run the numbers you are wrong.
First you get many top players from the AM TOC as well into this Am X-Ball league as well.
Too many AM players left to call it Novice. I think the reason they are calling it nov instead of AM so if you win and have to enter say skyball doesn't mean your an AM player.

I disagree, with 4 Xball teams sucking up 12-15 players a piece, that's a total of 16 teams worth of players removed from the formerly Novice->then Amatuer->Now Novice again circuit. Remember GT will be on different weekends from TOC so that those teams can play (like last year). So TOC player numbers are included in the number of teams removed. Most of the top 10 Teams will be playing Xball, I could even divide them up geographically if I had to. Plus remember, it was really only called Amateur to allow for some Shockwave players to play without cries of sandbagging ( which there were anway ) , this is just a "return" to novice for the GT, now that it's 3 levels deep. That being said. Yes, there are going to be a lot of excellent Novice (formerly forced to call themselves Am) teams left, and add in the cream of the rookie crop from last year and it should be a great season! ------ aside ------ Having played in both the Rookie and Amateur divisions last year, I can say the Amateur division was a lot more balanced then Rookie. In rookie there is a BIG difference between the teams on their way in to tournament play, and the teams on their way up to Novice/Am play. Look at the standings and it bears out, there were 10-12 really good teams, who basically used the others as food to get into the semis. In Amatuer (now Novice) there is much less "food/fodder", and it comes much more down to skill, knowledge fo the field, and who's having a good/bad day. It reminds me of playing my first tournament, the TOC 2000 at NTAG, man we were the food

ya I know what you are talking about.
But the one TO team is mainly Dogs players and a few others (now dogs played both series).
Then you get the other TO team lets call them Incursion.
Then you get the Montreal teams. All the french guys.
Ya the Novice will be a nice level to play this year and you are right on the Shockwave thing that is a big reason but I want to see how well it will go this year with one of the biggest helpers out now.

Ya the Novice will be a nice level to play this year and you are right on the Shockwave thing that is a big reason but I want to see how well it will go this year with one of the biggest helpers out now. The split of players isn't quite as cut and dried as that. One of the Montreal teams has several Toronto area players (including a former member of Incursion) playing for them. The "other" Toronto area team does have Dogs of War players on it (there are only 3 amateur Dogs players, remember). Who else is on their roster? A bit of a secret, I suspect... both Dogs and Incursion will have to jockey for players from Ontario... it will be interesting. My prediction... most of the quality players in Ontario will play with ONE of the Toronto teams, leaving the other one short of "brand name" players. Some would say this will weaken the other team, but you never know who will step up and perform. There is lots of "no-name" talent in Ontario. I guess the big question is will the format work out from a players perspective. Will there be enough sponsorship and prizes to keep the "name brand" players interested in competing in this league. X-ball GT style is a bit of a step away from what we are used to. With only 4 teams allowed, and no way for an independant team to participate, it isn't as open and "democratic" a system as the more conventional way things have been done. Only time will tell. I know I am only supposed to give my 2 cents worth, but tonight you get the whole quarter!

Well it's a good question SG, and only time will tell. With the number of players required to keep an XBall team running properly it could be hard for many teams to form, and how exciting can it be to see the same 4 teams goign at it over and over? I guess hopefully the format will compensate for that, not having seen any Xball yet I can't say. Another thing is we'd really need to see events move to stadiums with proper seating to encourage "crowds". I don't think I've ever seen non-paintball related spectators at an event (excepting maybe skyball). From all the pictures I've seen that's what makes the European circuit so exciting, fans. Anyway it's an exciting time for Paintball! Funny.. it reminds me of the Internet 4 years ago
